COLOR & WATER COLOR : : What is it?
Aquarelle – or watercolor painting, is the most delicate of
the painting arts, allowing
the characteristic lightness and translucency to show. White paper,
translucent color –
dissolved from water, is the “elixir of life”. These colors
are produced with very fine
pigments and natural rubber gum arabic (used as binder). Due to the
creamy
consistence of these colors, smooth shades can be realized.

Gouache (from the Italian guazzo – puddle) is the art of painting
with a kind of watercolor
to which a white pigment (like chalk) is added to get a mixture like
rubber gum arabic.
Because of this procedure the colors get brighter and have more covering
power as
aquarelle colors. When getting dry, these colors get a lot lighter
and sometimes it is
difficult to get the exact color shade that was planned.

Tempera: colors whose pigments are bonded with a mixture of water,
oil and glue. |
